Spiritual Babes

Babies are the cutest things (most of the time). Their appeal is irresistible to most people. Even behavior unacceptable in an older child or adult is understandable and tolerated to a great degree.
But– there is a time for babies to grow up. When this does not happen, it is a problem. In the Church at Corinth, the members were refusing to “grow up” spiritually. Their spiritual growth and development was in grave condition. Although adults physically, they were still “babes” spiritually. Thus the message came to them: They had never gotten off the baby bottle. Although “born again” to new life in Christ they remained spiritual infants.
And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal,
even as unto as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat:
for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife,
and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
1 Corinthians 1:1-4
So how do we “grow up”? Here’s part of it, at least:
1. By nourishment – “receive the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby”
2. By attention – “looking unto Jesus”
3. In grace and knowledge – “but grow in the grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ”
4. By staying in the (Son)light – “if we walk in the light as He is in the light”
